LIRC Success!

5 07 2008

Remote controlling a PC using an IR remote is a good idea. The required IR reciever is simple, cheap and can be built at home. The circuit diagram, PCB design and the software(both for Windows and Linux) can be found at www.lirc.org . In Hyderabad, all the components can be easily found at Koti and it costed me around Rs 60.

I use WinLIRC to decode IR signals, Girder (www.promixis.com) to control applications, and WinLIRC2Girder Plugin to connect WinLIRC and Girder

Mech@IIT-H

The seat allotment result of the Indian Institutes of Technology was a big relief. I have been alloted Mechanical engg. at IIT Hyderabad, one of the six new IITs being set up this year. Thankfully, I didnot end up with civil or naval architecture or biotech.

More on the new IITs later.

Annoying Snapshots

28 04 2008

Aren’t those snapshots more annoying than they are handy? The pop up every time you place your cursor over a link.

They are enabled in wordpress by default. I decided to do away with them.

Smallest Tablet

It’s got a 1GHz processor, a 30GB hard drive, 512MB of RAM, a color transflective display, and integrated wireless, as well as FireWire and USB ports, Windows XP os. It connects to your networks and peripherals. No, its not a laptop or a desktop. Its a — Believe me — a PC that fits in your pocket!!! This model 01+ from OQO can be connected to wireless networks with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth and to all your peripherals including monitors, projectors, full-size keyboards, optical drives, printers, and speakers to the OQO docking cable and the model 01+ is your desktop computer.

Just 4.9 inches long, 3.4 inches wide, 0.9 inches thin, and weighing only 14 ounces, the model 01+ from OQO can fit in a pocket or purse and go with you anywhere. For easy typing and cursor control it has a complete thumb keyboard with TrackStik and mouse buttons as well as digital pen and thumbwheel.

Another offering from Google

Google SketchUp

First a desktop search tool, a toolbar, then a web accelerator, and now a free 3D modeling tool called Google SketchUp. Google’s offering follows its acquisition of @Last software last month. This 3D tool is a smaller version of the one, which was offered by @Last software. I will definitely try it!
